Styles of Art

1. Impressionism

This is one of my favourite styles of art. Impressionism tries to create the feeling of a scene rather then producing it as it is. I feel like this style is not meant to look complete, like there is more to be added to the finished piece.

It started in the 19th century by artists around Paris. Images of suburban/country life outside Paris were fascinating to these artists, but the city of Pairs itself was artists main inspiration.
Water Lilies - Claude Monet

I adore the bright colours chosen, the brushstrokes really interest me and also i admire the way they capture the personality.

Claude Monet gives the perfect example of what impressionism is like. You can clearly see what the painting is thanks to the colours used, but also by the way he used the brush. The brushstrokes give it that water like effect.

2. Realism

This style of art i feel is much different to others, it looks at the world as it really is, the people in it and nothing mythological, fantasy. It revolted against romanticism. It's the way writers, musicians etc. though in the 19th century.
The Gleaners - Jean-Francois Millet

Artists and writers began exploring the everyday life of humans and examined what they do and how they do it.

On the right you can see a perfect example of realism from Jean-Francois Millet, my favourite realist artist. He captured the image so beautifully and made it come to life with some paints and a brush. It shows a good example of hard working people on just another day at the job. The amount of detail and time put into this is clear to see, I wouldn't have the patience for it.

History

Art has been around for over 40,000 years. Cave walls were drawn on, rocks, sculptures, the whole lot. The ancient civilizations all had different styles of art, they still do now. people used art for science, religion, expression, boredom, curiosity and much more but I could be here a while discussing it.

Famous woman from Wilendorf is a sculpture of a faceless, obese woman in a shower cap which is much different than the cave drawings which is why it fascinates me.

This cave painting on the left is one of my favourites. I love the small amounts of detail put into it, it shows what they was going on in this time of life. I feel like it was a way to pass information to others, or a ritual of some sort.

Most cave paintings are about hunting or animals, other abstract like paintings were found but they aren't as common.

Below this text is rock art, it is an archaeological term, and it is art carved into stone by humans. I find it fascinating how they do this. Just shows you really don't need a pen and paper, or any art supplies to create a work of art.

In some parts of the world they had art like poetry, pottery, drama, stories and clothing.

They believed that 'art is the property of the artist'.

During the middle ages, people started making realistic art. They no longer created unrealistic things and started making new works involving the bible.

People discovered that art can be used in science during the Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci painted mythical pictures along with scientific and religion. This is when they started to use perspective when painting the real world. They also started to look at the human body more as it is instead of how they think it should be.
The Scream - Vincent Van Gogh

Modern art came in around the time the Scream painting was created. Block colours, weird shapes, bright lights. This is when everybody started expressing themselves through art as if we need it in our lives or we'll never be relieved.

What is Art?

Art has been around for almost as long as human kind. Nobody's art is the same, each person has an individual style. If you want to be an artist, paint something, draw something, do something that makes you feel creative, you are now an artist. No work of art is ugly, it's simply art. Also, it's not that you can’t draw, everybody can draw, it’s just you’re not reaching to your full potential.

People may think of art as just a drawing on paper or a sculpture in a museum, but art is more than that. Music is art, film, theatre, technology, languages, food, weather, animals, the earth and the universe; people are art. Art is so much more than just colours on a canvas.

There is architecture, animation, photography, fashion and web design, graffiti, conceptual art, they’re all considered art.

Art can also be a form of communication. Emotions, feelings, they can all be communicated through art. The way you paint a picture, what colours you use, the image you are trying to create, it's all about expressing yourself, how you feel, what’s going on inside your mind and how you see things.

The visual arts are an easy and accurate way to show people who you are, and there are so many ways to go, don't just think of it as pencil and paper.
